Italy is world famous for its cultural heritage and incredible cuisine. However, it is such a diverse country that deserves a lot more time than we usually get. That is why it is often best to visit Italy several times to experience the many differences of places and people it has to offer.
If you’re trying to see as much of the country as possible in one trip, this is what we recommend.
Start in Rome, which is the capital of Italy. It is a truly magical city with historic buildings and statues surrounding you almost everywhere you go. Some highlights include the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and of course the Vatican City. The Roman Forum is also worth a visit.
From there you can head to Sorrento. It is a small town but it will give you a glimpse of “old” Italy and allow you to taste good Italian seafood and a famous Italian drink called Lemoenchello. We could then go up to Florence, famous for its art and its buildings. After Florence you should go to Pisa. There is more to this city than the Leaning Tower and definitely worth the walk. Another very famous and popular city is Venice. It is an absolute must see and is simply stunning. One of the best ways to get to all of these places is to rent a car and drive. This will make the trip much more flexible and spontaneous and remove the need for delays.
Italy has become a very popular country to visit, especially for South Africans. There are two airports that have airlines that have flights to Italy. These are Cape Town International Airport and OR Tambo Airport. The main airline operating these routes is SAA, but other airlines such as Virgin Atlantic and Air France also do so.
